Department of Histology and Embryology, Charles University, 2nd Faculty of Medicine in Prague was founded early after the establishment of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine on November 17, 1990 by the act of Spectabilis dean of the Faculty prof. Josef Koutecký, M.D., Ph.D.
The head of the Department was appointed Václava Konrádová, M.D., Ph.D. (associate professor 1991, full professor 1997). The Department assumed a part of staff and rooms of the former Institute for Research of Children Development in the Motol Hospital (laboratory of electron microscopy) and acquired a new area in the building of Theoretical and Pre-clinical Departments (TPD) at Plzeňská street (former Military Department of Charles University).
In 2003, the new head of the Department was appointed associate professor Luděk Vajner, D.V.M., Ph.D.
In summer 2004, a disastrous fire attacked the TPD. Although the Department of Histology and Embryology residing in the so-called upper stub wasn't directly damaged, the destruction of a part of the building naturally influenced its operation.
Since summer 2007, the Department lived rough in provisional places rented from Czech Technical University.
On Monday, October 10, 2011, the Department has moved to the new building, so-called Earthworm. On Thursday, December 8, 2011, the last piece of equipment was supplied and laboratories could start routine work.
