History of the Department
Department of Histology and Embryology of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles university was founded early after the establishment of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine on November 17, 1990 by the act of Spectabilis dean of the Faculty Professor Josef Koutecký, M.D., Ph.D.
Václava Konrádová, M.D., Ph.D was appointed as the Head of the Department. (she became an associate professor 1991 and a full professor 1997). The Department took over a part of staff and equipment from the former Institute for Research of Children Development in the Motol Hospital, especially the laboratory of electron microscopy, and acquired new premises in the building of Theoretical and Pre-clinical Departments (TPD) at Plzeňská street (former Military Department of Charles University).
In 2003, Associate Professor Luděk Vajner, D.V.M., Ph.D. was appointed the Head of the Department.
In summer of 2004, a disastrous fire broke out at the TPD. Although the Department of Histology and Embryology wasn't directly affected, the damage to the TPD building naturally influenced its operation.
In summer 2007, the Department acquired temporary premises from the neighbouring Czech Technical University.
In October 2011, the Department has moved to a new building known as the Earthworm, which has been the first building of the new 2nd Faculty of Medicine Campus in Plzeňská street.
On January 31, 2015, As. Professor Vajner resigned as the Department's Head. Jiří Uhlík, M.D., Ph.D. took charge of the Department's affairs and was officially appointed as the Head of the Department on July 1, 2015.
